The
primary purpose of the garden that surrounds the Larkspur
Center is to provide a therapeutic and learning experience
to program participants through horticulture. Horticultural
therapy incorporates plants and plant-related activities
to help improve the body, mind and spirit of the individual.
Horticultural therapy has become an accepted and effective
tool that offers cognitive, social, psychological
and physical benefits as well as improving one’s
quality of life. Gardening can bring about surprising
results, both in improving motor skills and in reducing
stress of individual with disabilities.
Marin Brain Injury Network participants get a hands-on
connection with the natural environment and life cycle.
By caring for plants, individuals work with a product
firmly anchored in reality. Participants realize that
they can have an effect on something else that is
living.
The
garden at Marin Brain Injury Network's Larkspur Center
has been lovingly created and designed by Master Gardners
Patricia Compton and Karen Halvorson, with donations
of funds specifically designated for the garden that
include labor, plants, soil, irrigation equipment
and other garden related items.
The newly installed Donor Brick Patio provides a donor
recognition area and is another means of funding through
the sale of bricks to supporters who wish to acknowledge
someone personally. It also provides a seating area
that many find reflective.
