About The Marin Brain Injury Network

Marin Brain Injury Network (MBIN) is a grassroots organization whose members include survivors of Acquired Brain Injury, their families and caregivers, professionals from the fields of medicine and social service, and other concerned individuals from throughout the community.

MBIN provides a community reintegration program at The Larkspur Center in Larkspur, California, near the College of Marin.  The program addresses the functional limitations and psychosocial barriers that survivors of acquired brain injury frequently experience.

The program objectives are:

  1. To help each participant increase his or her independence
  2. To facilitate each participant's re-entry into the community.

To achieve these objectives, the program provides education, training, and rehabilitation in cognitive, social, practical, and vocational skills.  With the help of the staff, participants identify short and long term goals that they wish to accomplish, and their progress toward these goals is regularly evaluated.  The staff is strongly committed to adapting the program to meet the individual strengths, needs, challenges, and desires of each participant.  The staff further believes that building self-esteem and encouraging self-determination are the foundation of the program.

The Larkspur Center receives funding from government agencies and private foundations.  Most clients are eligible for FREE services.  Scholarships are available, and private-pay participants are offered a sliding scale.

STRUCTURED DAY PROGRAM at THE LARKSPUR CENTER

The Larkspur Center is a day program that addresses the unique needs of adults with brain injuries. The Larkspur Center enables survivors of acquired brain injury to achieve greater independence and it facilitates their re-entry into the community. The Center offers therapies, job training, and other rehabilitative activities. ABI survivors meet daily to garden, create a hand-painted scarf, learn to cook, practice their computer skills, or participate in a variety of other activities designed to develop cognitive, social, life, and vocational skills.

The Center is certified by the Dept. of Rehabilitation to provide Personal, Social, and Vocational Adjustment Services.

PHILOSOPHY

All activities are adapted to meet the individual strengths, challenges, needs, and desires of each participant in the program. Participants are encouraged to identify short- and long-term goals they wish to achieve, and to regularly review their progress toward those goals. The daily schedule permits choice and balances group activities with individual projects. The program offers participants the opportunity to socialize and to support one another. Each participant is invited to discover, or re-discover, his or her own special talents.
